One thing that most people do not know is that drum sets come in different shapes and sizes. They also come in a variety of materials. You can’t just walk into a shop and get any drum set that catches your attention. There are tons of factors to be considered. For example, a ten year old can’t use the same set as a five year old would use. If you have discovered that your kid has passion for playing drums, and yet you have no clue of what kind of drum set to get them, here is a comprehensive guide that will help you make the right choice.

Factors to consider when buying drum sets for kids

1. Your child’s Age

This should be the first thing that comes to mind. There are drums designed for every age bracket. Does your kid require a toy drum set, or is he/she mature enough to handle a real set? That is the first question you should ask yourself. Toy drum sets are ideal for children up to 6 years of age. These kids drum set come with tools similar to those of real drums, and are mainly made of plastic. They help introduce kids into drumming.

For much older kids, usually up to 12 years, junior acoustic drums would be ideal. These drum sets are a mini version of adult drums. They come with smaller bass drums and up to 10 inch toms, making it very easy for a kid to play.
Depending on the kid’s capacity to play drums, you can choose to get them an advanced set.

This should be at the age of 12 and above. However, age should not be the major parameter that determines whether you should get an adult set for your kid.

I mean, how many times have we seen ten year olds playing adult drums perfectly well?

2. Drum set brands

Not all brands are the same in quality. Quality of drums directly corresponds with cost. Cheap brands may not produce quite the best sounds. Also, you might wanna consider their re-sale value. Your child is going to outgrow the drums sooner or later, and there could be need to sell the drums.

There is no point of you buying something that you won’t be able to sell later on. Ludwig and Gammon brands are known to be the best. But then again, it is important to consider your budget before making a decision to purchase drum sets.

3. Types of drum sets

Drums come in two types, electronic and acoustic. Electronic sets are much smaller compared to acoustic ones, and generate lower sound levels. This is the most ideal set for amateurs, and of course come in handy if you are trying to keep it low with noise in your home.

Acoustic drum sets are more complex. They contain pieces such as bass drum, snare drums, toms and cymbals. If your kid is a pro, you might consider getting one of this for him/her.Clearly, there is so much to take into consideration before purchasing drum kits. Don’t waste your money by buying the wrong one. Be wise and invest in the right set.
